ROY AND CHER’S NOW A CANADIAN REGISTERED CHARITY
BAINSVILLE, ON -- Since July 2013 Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm (locally known as Roy and Cher’s Animal Rescue) has been assisting animals rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. The organization run entirely by volunteers is based in South Glengarry, Ontario but its services reach throughout Eastern Ontario and Southern Quebec. On January 1, 2017 Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm was granted charitable registration by the Canada Revenue Agency. From that day forward, all donations are eligible for an official tax receipt.
Angela Parker, Founder & Director of Operations for Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm is excited about the registration. “We are thrilled, and relieved! We’ve been working on our charity application since 2013. There were some setbacks, but we’ve succeeded. It was a long process, but it helped us grow and learn more about charity administration.”
Not only can the new charity provide official tax receipts, it can also now apply for more grants and funding. In 2016, Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm raised $11,900 for the animals. The Directors would like to triple that for 2017. Over $9,000 alone was used for medical costs, including medications, treatments, and surgeries. Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm currently focuses on its spay and neuter and adoptions programs; however, there are plans for it to further develop its animal geography research and horse education program. “There are future plans to incorporate equine assisted learning into our existing horse education program, as well as further development for our feral cat geography research.” Parker and Sean Herridge-Berry (both graduates of Concordia University’s geography program) are working on mapping feral cat colonies within Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Ontario and tracking the progress of TNR (trap-neuter-return), as well as relocation, in these areas.
“It is so important that we limit the number of kittens being born. There are too many unwanted cats and it has been very difficult for our organization as well as other animal rescues to adopt them out,” Herridge-Berry said in regards to Roy and Cher’s Spay & Neuter Program. “And mapping the colonies will give us a better idea if our program is actually working effectively.” To date, over 85 feral cats have been spayed, neutered, vaccinated and examined through Roy and Cher’s Spay & Neuter Program.
Since 2013, Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm has assisted almost 300 animals, including four horses rescued from slaughter. One of the horses is a permanent resident with Roy and Cher’s and is part of the education program. The other three horses have found forever homes.

Roy and Cher’s Rescue farm is governed by a board of directors: Angela Parker (Director), Chantal Comtois (Vice President), Sean Herridge-Berry (Treasurer), Sheri Couchman (Secretary), and Rita Asangarani (Executive Director).
